THE GREENE COUNTY TAX PROPOSALS

Let's dig a little deeper into the Greene County taxes proposals which will be appearing on the November ballot. There will be three one percent taxes on the ballot. Two will be an extension of the existing Education and Transportation taxes. But one will be a new tax of one percent which will be used to decrease taxes for property owners.

The SPLOST tax which we passed in March of 2025 will continue for six years and was estimated to generate $60 million. This tax is a broader tax than any of the other three which will appear on the November ballot.

The County Commissioners are proposing a transportation tax (TSPLOST) which will be for six years and will have generated their estimated $35 million sometime in 2027. They are estimating that the new tax will generate $66 million based on the increased tax revenue and the benefit of visitors to Greene County who pay taxes while here. The estimate is that 60 percent of the tax is paid by visitors.

The transportation tax will be shared with the five other cities in the county based on road mileage. The county would get about 54 million followed by the cities of Greensboro, Union Point, White Plains, Woodville and Siloam in that decreasing order.

The County Commissioners passed the one percent (FLOST) tax for five years on July 27th and will take effect on January 1st of 2027 if approved by voters on the November ballot. The money can only be used by the county and the cities of Union Point and Greensboro to reduce county and municipal taxes. There will be a delay in tax reductions with the full effect on your property tax bill in the fall of 2028.

The Board of Education also held a meeting July 13th and voted to extend their one percent Education (ESPLOST) for 5 years. They did set a limit of $75 million on their tax. This is the third tax request which will appear on the ballot in November.

The countywide tax rate would be nine percent if all three of the new taxes are voted in along with the existing SPLOST. Greene County would be one of the small number of Counties with the highest taxes in Georgia.

Citizens of the county need to meet with County and Education officials at regular meetings or small groups to find out what they plan to spend about $200 million dollars on in the next five or six years so we can make a better decision of the need for one or more of these taxes.

We’ve had a busy several weeks on the campaign trail! As we continue to approach Election Day, I want to give a brief update on the campaign, including a list of upcoming events and ways you can get involved.

An Update on the Trail

Last week after our campaign breakfast at The Rose (more on that below), I was honored to participate on a panel at the Georgia Chamber of Commerce’s annual Congressional Luncheon in Athens, where more than 2,500 people from across the state gathered here in the 10th District.

Earlier in the week, I toured Caterpillar’s Athens plant and recently visited Jackson EMC headquarters. I also attended the groundbreaking for St. Mary’s new facility at Lake Oconee, and we've been making many other stops across the district in between. One of the most meaningful moments was spending time with the young leaders at Frontline Policy. I was especially honored when they took time to pray over our team. I’m truly thankful for the next generation of young people who are stepping up, getting involved, and committed to making a difference.

We are now just about eight weeks away from early voting, and there is no slowing down. Over the coming weeks, I’ll be continuing to travel across the district—meeting folks, attending events, and listening to the priorities that matter most to the people I’m running to represent. Our team is hitting the ground hard, too. We’re knocking on doors, recruiting new volunteers, and building the grassroots organization we’ll need for the final stretch.

There is plenty of work ahead, but I’m encouraged by the momentum we’re building and the growing number of people joining our team. With 80 days until Election Day, our focus is simple: keep showing up, keep working hard, and keep building a strong organization across all 20 counties as we head toward early voting and Election Day.

Breakfast at the Rose

We had a PACKED house at the Rose Downtown in Athens for our breakfast fundraiser last week! Thank you to everyone who joined us for this great event. I'm especially grateful to the many statewide and local elected officials and candidates who attended, along with nearly 150 friends and supporters. We had a great conversation about the stakes in November and the importance of electing conservatives up and down the ballot.
